about

Following the release of her award-winning album, " Doll Divider", Olivia Louvel is now delivering,"ō, music for haiku", certainly one of her most idiosyncratic and unique works.
On the fringe of her electronic textural songs, she has developed an approach even more minimal:
Based on haiku by poet Bashō (1644-1694), she has composed a sparse soundtrack, voice and silence, which exist in a state far from our pressing times.

Nominated by the jury for the Prix Ars Electronica 2013
Digital Music & Sound Art category

-'Tsuka Mo Ugoke' even has a runaway synth burbling away in the background that creates a strange acid-washed ambience, with reverb-drenched washes giving the whole piece a sepia-tinted, slightly dream-like quality, while 'Kumo Ori-Ori' includes a naked melody reminiscent of Brian Eno's The Shutov Assembly. Despite the intentional economy of sounds deployed here because of the emphasis on the voice, these sounds are an integral part of the atmospheres on display here. In Louvel's own words from the press release, the effect overall is one of 'sad beauty'; though I've tried, I can't find any better way of expressing the impression that these pieces leave than those two words.
